Do not want rounded rectangle marquee

Hi,

I'm using CS2 on Windows XP Pro. I want to use the REGULAR rectangle marquee--the one with right angles at the corners, not rounded corners--but no matter what I do PhotoShop rounds the rectangle. I have the rectangle marquee selected (the marquee tool, not the shape tool). I have confirmed this numerous times. I have tried deleting ImageReady's preferences file and PhotoShop's preference file. I've tried using the fixed width marquee option. I've tried using the polygonal lasso tool. No matter what, the marquee starts out as a rectangle, but as soon as I let off the mouse button, it changes to a rounded rectangle. This is very frustrating. How can I get the regular rectangle marquee to work?

Thank you very much!

Sounds like you have it set to feather the selection. Set that back to zero pixels.

Ah ha! That did result in a rectangular marquee. Unfortunately, the reason I am using the marquee is to feather the edges of the photo. Is there a way to do that with the rectangular marquee?

No it didn't. You were working with the "rectangular" marquee all the time. It's just that if you feather (soften the edges of) something with a sharp corner, that sharp corner will become... well... "softened".

"Soften a sharp corner and it becomes... "Rounded".

Personally I prefer to do just that. Leave the Options bar setting on "Zero", to facilitate making a precise selection, and then use SELECTION>FEATHER (Crtl+Alt+D) to add the feathering afterwards.

Hope this helps

Chris.

Thanks, Chris! I understand your answer exactly... unfortunately, the "feather" option under the "select menu" is grayed out. I've tried flattening the layers to see if this will help, and tried using it both on the original image and on the image copied to a new file, but no go. Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't work either. The file is in RGB mode so that isn't it. I tried closing PhotoShop and opening it again; no luck. Any ideas? Sorry!
