Why am I seeing this when I try to open a photoshop.psd or .psb document?

I have seen this in the past on other machines other than my own and for no reason other than the image was saved. The next time you try and open it you get this message.

How do you fix the image so that you can open it.

This happens all to often.

Two things can cause this kind of damage:

1.– NAV (Norton Anti Virus), and

2.– Opening and/or saving across a network.

The bad news is that, in either case, your file is toast. :/

You may be able to open the flattened composite if you are able to open the image in Graphic Converter, Illustrator or ImageReady; but the layers are not recoverable.

Well I never opened the image over a network and I don’t have Nortons on my computer. The image shows up fine in the Bridge with all of the information attached.

How can the file be toast?
The image was saved in PS a few hrs ago and now it won’t reopen. This has to be a photoshop bug or problem, why can’t the file be fixed to open? Several other files have been saved and open fine durring the same time.

My response was predicated on either your running NAV or working across a network. If neither of those conditions applies, then you have to look at hardware issues (hard drive, RAM, cables, connections) that may be contributing to the file damage.

Photoshop is very sensitive to file errors that other applications will bypass in order to show you just the flattened composite.

Do a forum search. The issue comes up from time to time.

Unfortunately, no one has been able to find a way to recover a file that returns that particular error message. Saving the flattened composite is your best bet.

Hello Adobe,
This is a MAJOR issue!!!!

If you can’t save a file with confidence without flattening it , we have a problem Houston.

I have no other issues on my system and I work in many graphics programs daily, saving files and manipulating graphics.

Hornet,

You are NOT addressing Adobe here in these user to user forums. We are all users just like you, trying to help each other out.

We offer solutions and workarounds, not a defense of Adobe or an apology for anything.

I wonder if this is a Rosetta issue?

There seems to be a lot of this lately. I have not been paying attention as to what platform this is happening on.

Good point, Buko.

Reading the endless posts by Mac-Intel machines over at the beta forums, I just feel like looking for the best G5 Quad I can find on the second-hand market. Well, I can’t afford one anyway.

It doesn’t seem realistic that programmers are going to get a proper handle on writing Universal code for the Intel machines any time soon either. :/

Using G5 2 gig X.4.8 non startup Internal sata drives for scratch. external FW drives for storage.

Yes I know, but they do read some of the forum and there is no alternative other than submitting bugs where you get no response.

If the problem recurrs, I would check all my connections and cables

I still advocate Repairing Permissions before AND after any system update or upgrade, as well as before AND after installing any software that requires an installer that asks for your password.

I have seen software installations go sour because the installer did not find everything as and where it should be.

I have also seen software installations go bad because the installer did not clean up after itself properly and did not leave everything as and where it should be.

This is just my own personal opinion and practice based on my own observations. Others may disagree and that’s OK. I can only base my routines and my advice to others on my own experience and conclusion. I don’t pretend to know why others believe otherwise.

Repairing Permissions after the fact (i. e. not immediately before and after an install) may NOT help.

Additionally, if your machine does not run 24/7 so that it runs the daily, weekly and monthly Cron Scripts in the middle of the night as intended by Apple, run Cocktail (shareware) as well.

Cron Scripts are maintenance routines designed by Apple to run on a daily, weekly and monthly basis in the middle of the night.

If you don’t run them, you WILL run into trouble, sooner rather than later.

Here’s an excerpt from the Apple tech doc <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107388>

Mac OS X performs background maintenance tasks at certain times if the computer is not in sleep mode. If your computer is shut down or in sleep at the designated times, the maintenance does not occur. In that case, you may want or need to run these manually.
Mac OS X periodically runs background tasks that, in part, remove system files that are no longer needed. This includes purging older information from log files or deleting certain temporary items. These tasks do not run if the computer is shut down or in sleep mode. If the tasks do not run, it is possible that certain log files (such as system.log) may become very large.
Also, from: <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106978>

The disk activity generated by find is a normal part of file system maintenance, used for tasks such as removing invisible temporary files that are used by the system. It is scheduled to occur early in the morning at 03:15 everyday, 04:30 on Saturdays, and 05:30 on the first day of each month.
