I'm trying to make a compound shape by copy/pasting a shape into the same layer and using Add to Shape area...
the regular copy/paste commands aren't working and it needs to be in the same layer so Duplicate Layer won't do it...

Shapes are not on layers; they are vector masks so they exist in the Paths palette. Open the Paths palette, select the Shape you want to paste into the other Shape, Copy or Cut, click on the other Shape in the Layers palette, click on its Path "layer" Paste.

Use the Direct Selection tool or the Path Selection tool, run a Marquee around the Shape, copy or cut, click on the Vector Mask in the target layer Paste.
