Can you invert vector masks? For example, lets say I have an image of a ball in the grass. I select the path tool, outline the ball then convert the path to a vector mask. What I get is the ball knocked out of the grass instead of an image with a ball and no grass.

Select the path with the Path Selection Tool. Then check the second icon in its option bar ("Subtract from Shape Area")

Go to the Paths palette. If you have a work path you can invert that using the icons on the Options Bar with the Pen. If no Work Path, duplicate the Vector Mask and use that (deleting the original VM).

Can’t you just go to Channels and Invert the mask?

Vector Mask, not Layer Mask.

Copy Vector mask Layer>Rasterize copy>Invert Layer mask? Sorry, Just seems quick and simple, to me.

Select the path. Change it to Subtract from Shape Area.

Simple- 2 clicks, and retains all vector editing properties.
