I cannot get the selection tool to deselect unless I hit the command D. When I click off it won’t do anything. Perhaps its the little M next to it on the palette? How do I get rid of it? How did it get there? Thank you for any help.

What do you mean exactly?

Hitting command-D is the way to remove a selection.

Changing tools does not remove a selections, else how would you work with it?

The M (or any other letter next to a tool) is there to indicate which ke to use to access the tool with the keyboard

In the Options Bar on the left there are four icons. You probably want the one furthest left. When you make the marquee and click outside of it does the cursor have a minus or plus sign or an x?

Ed, you are my hero!
You solved it!! Thank you! It had a minus sign.
The farthest left one works. YAY!
