I am working in an extremely old version (5.0) of Photoshop and was wondering how to create a beveled edge on an object that is destined to become a button on the web.

Things I’ve tried include:
1) the button area (72px wide x 25px high) was the size of the canvas originally, but when I did Layer > effects, nothing happened.
2) I doubled the size of the canvas both width and height. This time when I did Layer > effect and chose bevel and emboss, I saw an effect but it appeared to be more of a drop shadow, not a beveled edge.
3) I also tried a gradient with a different color, but still didn’t work.

I’m not sure what else to try or know if this is even possible to do in this version of Photoshop, but I am assuming it is possible because of the option of "Bevel and Emboss". Maybe I’m not doing things in the correct order or something. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!
Kirsten
