Is it not possible to simply rasterize the style of 1 layer? I can't find the command so I instead I always find myself creating a new empty layer and choosing merge layers or merge down, when all I really want to do is flatten the layer style(ie, make them pixels)Mark,

The layer styles are pixels. Are you trying to apply a layer style to the background layer? You can't until you "unlock" it. Alt + double click on its name in the layers palette.

no, I want to rasterize the whole layer...
ie, I create a new layer, draw a rectangle, add some effects.....then I want to flatten just that layer. The exactly same if I had created another layer and merged the two
You want to merge the style effects with the content of the layer? If I had a rectangle on a transparent layer to which I had added say, a drop shadow or glow and I wanted to erase the shadow or glow on one of the edges, I would put an empty layer below it and merge them (Ctrl + E) never found any other way to achieve this.

it seems lots of people use this method. Doesn't it seem silly to create another layer and merge it just to flatten the first layer? I dunno why adobe didnt add this simple feature.
