Perhaps you mean Adobe Illustrator 10?
You do get better text in Illustrator which you can then export to PS However the choice is up to you.
The following applys to both progs.
If by mathematical equations you're trying to get indices above the variable as in 'x to the power 3' etc
Firstly type x3
Secondly highlight the number 3 and change the baseline shift in the character palette to an appropriate value to move the index upwards. You'll have to experiment with different values depending on your font size.
You can also change the font size and appearance here
Subscripts etc can be done in a similar way.
