"Layer Thickness" In Photoshop?

Dearest Colleagues,

I have, lets say, a circle in photoshop and I want to give that circle some depth, lets say for aruguments sake an inch so that I can later import it and use it in Adobe After Effects. Actually, its a wee bit more complicated than a circle, so lets think of a CD with the circle in the middle.

Is there a way to make this layer "thicker" in the eyes of photoshop. I know I could use it with some god Awful program like autocad, but thats overkill.

Any pointers in the right direction will be greatly appreciated as always.

Would applying a layer style do what you want? Maybe a drop shadow and some bevel?
A circle (2D) an inch deep would be a squat cylinder (3D) and would need to be drawn as such would it not?

I get the bit, and I understand it. So you are talking about a custom drop shadow (that is to say, a bigger one than typical out of the box) and the same with beveling - I know these things, no problem.

You did mention "applying a layer style". Are you just referring to the things above, or is there something that I am not aware of?

Hello Walt,

It's a long-time since I was called sir ;)
The aforementioned layer style is exactly that, just double click on the blue, layer selection indicator in the layers palette to launch the layer styles dialogue box. (or Layer>Layer Styles from the menu bar) If by out the box you mean the default style settings, then yes, play around with the size and distance settings. Also, in the Bevel and Emboss section try different Contour settings (above Texture)
For any of these to work, the circle or whatever needs to be isolated on it's own empty layer. Is this something you are creating from scratch? Is so, do it on an empty, transparent layer.
