do you have the Jpeg2000 plugin installed? its on the CD in the goodies folder.

did you move the photoshop application out of the photoshop folder?

jpeg2000 is not installed.. and the application has not moved.. its really puzzling because we have edited the images that will not open previously in photoshop. and most images will open, while some have the error popup.. we will try the plugin though, what is it for?

oh… is there something that could have happened to the images without our doing?

just tried opening the image once again.. and a similar error appears, but slightly different in that it now says "unknown or invalid JPEG MARKER TYPE is found"… does that change things/help to figure the problem out?

That message means the file is probably corrupt.

The first message you reported is strange…

ok, do you know how the file could have been corrupted? we havent edited the image in a while and now we’ve come back to it and it won’t open.. there are a few files in this similar situation..

Are you working/saving over a network?
Do you have any "Norton" software installed?
Both can and do corrupt files.

Did you save open files directly to a Server?

hmm.. the only thing i can think of related to that is that we’re designing a book with InDesign using two iMacs.. the files are located on one computer and are being edited on both but saved back to one hard drive.. but we’ve been doing this all summer and only running into problems now.. and not on all images, only a few..

Try saving the files on the computer on which they are being worked; and then dragging the closed file to replace the older file on the other computer.

This same thing happens when you "save as" web images from the AOL browser.

You might try opening the file in Graphic Converter. If it will open, resave it as a jpeg (or, better, a TIFF).
