Been searching for some kind of Engraved/Woodcut effect like they do on faces in the New York Times.
I was wondering what the actual process is that they use in the newspaper… and if it’s possible to achieve it using Photoshop. I tried a few filters by Andromeda, etc., but so far have not found a filter or a way to duplicate this effect exactly.
Any ideas…?
Here’s an example:

Thanks a bunch!

The woodcut effect is a tough nut to crack…

Here’s what I have to start for you, but I haven’t found great success either.

Here’s a link to an Andromed Filter "Cutline" for windows that you may have already tried,
ftp://efxservices.com/pub/demos/pc/pccutl.exe

The Andromeda Etchtone is also another candidate, as well as the Adobe Gallery Crosshatch.

I have another filter called woodcut.8bf, but I can’t seem to find it in my filters menu, probably because I have too many filters installed.

But the effect you showed on the image isn’t really so much a woodcut, as a stipple effect…
What it seems you are looking for is a variation on the stochastic screen used in litograpgic printing, that mimics the stipple effect. I haven’t seen one around, but if you use those words, you may be able to find something…???

I can email you the woodcut.8bf filter if you can use it,…

DO let me know what success you have, as I would like to use the same or similar effect for my work.

Let me know if you want that filter file…

Cheers,

Yeah… I found out that particular effect I want is called a "hedcut", and a handful of artists are hired to do the headshots for the NY Times. It’s basically done by hand like a tracing. So… basically I guess I gotta try doing it myself by hand, maybe with a top layer over a portrait.
I dunno.

I know this is not what you are looking for.. (sort of close though).. anyway I thought you might be interested in it .. I use this program for making POP Art posters and it works well on a large scale, IE. 8×10 or bigger.. I made a 8X10 black and white sample for you, here: http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e76/grannysdc/Rastered%20A lbum/Rastered.jpg made from this original:

The Rasterbator is an application which creates rasterized versions of images. The rasterized images can be printed and assembled into enormous (or smaller, if you prefer) posters.
If interested, "The Rasterbator" and is free at: http://arje.net/rasterbator it does color also..

And I called a software maker, that deals with Stochastic screening and halftones, (stochastic screen dots are uniform in size, and restribute themselves appropriately, in a nonuniform position, and according to density required). The Software company said yesterday that they would try to see if there program could drop the dot pitch to somewhere between 15-40 dpi. This would almost certainly be a very close approximation to the hand stipple effect that you showed in the webpage…

The Software is called Remarque, and the website is:
http://www.seecolor.com/stochastic.html

Don’t call then just yet, I called wednesday, and spoke to the manager for the Remarque program, and today when I called bakc to check on his progress, he is pressed for time to get something done for USA Today Newpaper…
(It’s a program for Newpaper prepress)

I will keep in contact with them, and tell you when I know sonething…
