Filters in CMYK mode

I need to spec a specific CMYK value (100C, 70M, 30K) but I also need to apply a texture filter to that layer but they're only available in RGB. If I plug those CMYK values into the color picker while working in RGB, I would think I would get an RGB value that would convert back to my original CMYK value but instead it comes back with a CMYK value that's out of gamut.

What am I missing?

Nothing. If a filter does not work in CMYK, and your image is out of rgb gamut, there is no way to use that filter.

What texture are you aiming to get. Someone might know a way to get there without the filter.

Just a simple sandstone out of Texturizer.

Thanks.

Ah, got it. New layer, fill 50%K, texturize, set layer mode to overlay. Even allows playing with levels and opacity.

Thanks for the idea Don!

You could also try applying the filter to various channels. You can get some pretty interesting effects that way. Only works with filters that are compatible with grayscale.

Just saw this on CreativePro.com.

Use RGB Filters While in CMYK Some filters, such as the Render filters, are disabled in CMYK. To get around this, work in RGB mode with CMYK preview turned on (CTRL/CMD+Y). Build your file as normal; when you are finished, convert it to CMYK. This will allow all the filters to work, give you a smaller file, and you won't lose your colors when you convert the file. Only use CMYK for going to a commercial printing press.

Doesn't quite make sense to me. Working in preview isn't the same as working in CMYK. Maybe WYSIWYG, but can't use CMYK colors.

You could also apply the filter to one channel, click on the next channel, ctrl f to repeat.
