TYPE TOOL PROBLEMS !!!!!! Photoshop 6.0

Every time I set up my background layer and try to type some fancy lettering , the type tool turns into the move tool when I click on the layer. This started happening a few months ago and now I can't use the type tool at all because it always turning into the move tool. What do I do ? Was it some wrong setting that I have or what? Please help!!!!!!!!!!!

Check this. Click on the Move Tool. Look in the options bar at the top. Look for a checkbox that says Autoselect Layer. If it's checked, uncheck it.
