does anyone know if there is a way to view the file size of a file in photoshop elements without having to save it? for example, say you are resizing an image and you want to resize it so that it is under a certain file size, theres gotta be an easier way than to resize, save, then go through windows to see the file size. thanks in advance for your help.

Ah, what you’re looking for is the "Save for Web …" option. This will let you play with the JPEG quality and pixel dimensions and do a side by side comparison of ‘before’ and ‘after’, as well as give you a file size and download time estimate, before you actually save a copy of the file.

This assumes, of course, that you are trying to save your image as JPEG, GIF or PNG.

What format are do you want to save it in?
If it is JPEG..you can see the file size below the slider when you set it for the file quality. It will say Meaning it is a little over 1 meg in size, and it will take 35 seconds to send it on line with a 56K modem.
I never noticed a size notice when saving in TIFF, I would guess because they figure it wont matter, because the size is so large anyway..? (But that would only be a guess.)

m. takatumi:

There are a few tools at your disposal. If you are planning to save the file as a TIFF or PSD, there’s an estimate of the size of your file that will apppear in the lower right corner of your display if you check the right option. Click on the right-pointing arrowhead on the bottom bar and choose the option "Document Sizes". From that point on, the pair of numbers at the bottom gives you a rough estimate of the size of the file in flattened form (the number to the right of the slash) and with layers intact (number to the right of the slash.

If you’re planning to save as a JPEG, you can go to the Save As dialog, pick JPG, hit Save and then pick a Quality (1-12). At the bottom of the Save dialog box it will show the size in k bytes. You can then just cancel without saving.

You can also use the Save for Web dialog to save as a JPEG (or GIF, but that’s not a good thing generally) and get a similar display of size. Again, you can cancel the save after getting your information.

A little cumbersome, but it gets the job done.

Hi

On the status bar you will see the View Size and next to it you will see the document dimensions. Right next to that you will see a black arror head. Click on that and choose Document Sizes. The size of the file will now be displayed there.

Another way is to click on Image, Image Size. The Pixel Dimension gives the file size.

Thank you James…that took special effort and I really appreciate your time to send a screen shot. My problem now is that I do not have the status bar or any bar showing at the bottom of my screen. How careless of me to lose it somehow…wonder how I can "recover" it? It looks vaguely (sp) familiar, so I bet I had it at one time. Goodness I feel so helpless sometimes about such simple things…I hope simple! Do
