Selecting multiple items by dragging

Hi All

Is there a way I can quickly select multiple items appearing in a given area of a photoshop document just by dragging over that area? I have tried dragging the Path Selection Tool and Direct Selection Tool but that does not work.

Any comments appreciated.

Different paradigm: Photoshop does not really allow for the selection of "items" you select pixels instead
