I no longer have access to the help files in Photoshop CS2. When I click on "help" from within Photoshop I get the error message "The operation could not be completed". After I click OK, I get an ahc.exe - application error, "The instruction at 0x00864a4d referenced memory at 0x00f20b08. The memory could not be written. Click OK to terminate the program".
I have tried the following suggestion from the forum, "check to see if there is a Photoshop_9.0_en-us.zip file present and then run the ahc.exe", but I got the same error messages. Is there anyone who can tell me what the problem might be and how to correct it? I have Windows XP.

Patricia,

Thank you Len for your help. I checked the FAQs as you suggested and I downloaded the latest help package 2.0 (I thought I had the latest version since I run the Adobe updater frequently). When I tried to install 2.0 I got the following error messages: "The operation could not be completed" and "error 1722, There is a problem with this windows installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor". Is there anything else I can try?

Patricia,
Try re-booting into SAFE MODE and then running the installer

Thanks, but I'm afraid I don't know enough about computers to navigate in safe mode. Guess I'll just have to rely on books to get the help I need in Photoshop. Maybe the next CS2 update will eliminate the bug? Thank you for your help.

Patricia,
Press F8 (Function key 8) right at start-up to invoke a list of choises, then choose "safe mode".
In this mode the pc becomes rather Spartan; no network; an awfull screen; no Antivirus, but nothing inthe way either. install now, and reboot as usual.

And replace the bleedin' smiley with "eight)".

Just reinforcing what Rob said: after switching the computer on, start tapping F8 and keep tapping it till you get the menu where you can choose "Safe Mode".
Don't be put of by the spartan appearance it just means only the essentials are running which should avoid anything interfering with the install.
The next time you start up, everything will be back to normal.

Thank you Rob and John for your advice. I tried what you suggested and because of your instructions, I wasnt as intimidated by safe mode as I expected to be. However, the installation of Adobe Help Center 2.1 didnt work. I received the following message when I tried to install:
The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed, this can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.
Maybe this is a Windows issue and not Photoshop at all. Im confused.
