Extruding a Shape in Photoshop

How do you extrude a shape in Photoshop? That is, to extend a flat shape forward in space so that it becomes three dimensional. I recall I used to have that capacity in the old photoshop, but I've lost it with OS X, or maybe I was thinking of some other application altogether. I added the 3D Transform filter, and that's not it; darned if I can figure the purpose of that thing (no wonder they don't include it by default anymore).

If some other application is preferable to Photoshop for this purpose, please advise. I know the new Illustrator has it, but I can't afford it.

Thanks.

Yours truly,

John Mayer

never mind; I borrowed a copy of Illustrator. I still think there used to be a way to do this in Photoshop, though.
