Thanks John,
That doesn’t seem to work if it’s a pattern background. It just creates a coloured (ie in this case Red) version and I can’t pull out the pattern behind it..

It’s hard to envision what’s going on from your description.

Where’s the red coming from?

Did you make sure the Rounded Rectangle tool was set to "Paths" in the Options Bar at the top? From there, right-click the path and choose "Make Selection…".

Is the file multi-layered? If so, make sure you select the pattern layer before doing Ctrl + J.

No, I hadn’t set the tool to paths – it was on shape layers!! Thanks John. Works well!
