Tony, I think that he tried an ALT+click on the merge visible layer.
Joe, what other programs are installed?
Have you tried deleting your preferences? re-installing very seldomly cures problems.

Thanks Pierre. If that's the case, then it would confirm that it's just the shortcut issue and not a technique issue (which is why I had him do that).
