Free Hand Transparency

I have an image to be exported to 'gif' for web use with a colored background and a contrasting color over it. I would like to create a transparant area within it, completely transparent - no background color. How can I do this?

Make your graphic in Photoshop with the transparency you want and Save for Web. Do you know how to use Layer Masks?

use save for web and select the "color" that you wish to be transparent in there...

Ed:
Layer Masks? No, not yet. I'm just getting started and that's not been one of the areas I've dug into. Where would you suggest I start? Any favorite tutorials?

Dave:
I didn't see the color to transparency option in the web save tool. I will use that. Thanks.

Tutorials, no, but if you Google "Layer Mask" I am sure you will find many. Or look in Help. Also, you might wanyt to do a search on "Transparent Gif".

The point is, it's a way to get transparency without erasing or deleting.

The color method in SFW is okay but I don't use it because you might have a color area you want to be transparent and the same color in an area you don't5 want to be transparent. Too much like the old GIF 89a export feature in olden days for me. Actually I didn't even use it then.

Thanks Ed.

Half the battle is knowing what to Google. I was curious about what masks were anyway.
