Eraser working backwards.

I was messing around with a few images creating an adjustment layer with 0% saturation over a background then using the eraser tool to erase that layer to reveal colour (background) selectively

I went back a few weeks later to continue working on these images and now the eraser seems to be working in reverse. All areas in colour, that is areas i erased previously, are the only areas affected by the eraser tool. the effect being that it seems to re-apply the 0% saturation layer making the area revert to black and white

I am very, very new at this........please help

The eraser tool just "paints" the image with whatever the background colour (have they been reversed? Hit D on the keyboard to restore the default and X to swap fore/background colours) is and is not a good way to "remove" parts of the image you do not want.(I know you are working on an adjustment layer) Once painted over they are gone, a better way would be to use a mask with the adjustment layer, and paint on that with the brush tool to reveal/hide parts of the image you want. This method is none destructive, you can always go back and correct any mistakes. Another, simpler way to achieve what you seem to be doing would be Image>Adjustments>Desaturate, this will remove all the colour from your image (same as your adjustment layer) then using the history brush, paint over the parts of the image you want coloured.

Just reread your post, if you are working on an adjustment layer, it will already have its layer mask associated with it. The problem you describe is due to your fore/background colours being reversed, hit X on keyboard to toggle. You shouldn't be using the eraser tool for this, use the brush tool to paint on the mask, paint with black (with mask active/selected) to allow the underlying colour to show through, paint with white to hide it again.
