Photoshop 7.0.1 G5 Update not recognizing G5 processor.

I just received a CTO Dual 2.0 G5/1GB RAM/160GB HD/Radeon 9700 128MB/Bluetooth Power Macintosh from the Apple Store on August 20th. I tried to install the Photoshop 7.0.1 G5 update that is included with the machine and it gives me the following error:

"The software to be installed requires a G5 computer."

I click OK and the program immediately quits. I've tried downloading the update directly from Adobe and from versiontracker.com and they all give me the same error. I'm guessing the model I received has a newer CPU ID than what the installer recognizes. Any ideas on what is going on?

I am running Mac OS X 10.3.5 and Photoshop 7.0.1.

Thanks,
- Per Christensson

Are you sure photoshop is at version 7.0.1 I just read the G5 plugin install directions and it says the G5 plugin won't install if PS is just 7.0 it must be updated to 7.0.1 first.

Buko,

Thanks for the idea, but I am positive it's at 7.0.1. I installed the update a few months ago and it says 7.0.1 on the splash screen and the About Photoshop window. =/

Maybe you should reinstall and reaply the 7.0.1 update. don't forgrt to trash your prefs. and repair permissions after each install,

You need to get a newer version of the upgrader (it doesn't recognize the newest version of the G5 processors), or just get Photoshop CS.
#6
Agh, I've tried everything. I completely uninstalled Photoshop 7.0.1. Then I reinstalled Photoshop 7.0 from the original CD. Then I ran the 7.0.1 updater, which I just downloaded from the Adobe Web site. Then I ran the 7.0.1 G5 Update, which I also just downloaded from the Adobe Web site.

As soon as it starts to run, I get an error saying, "The software to be installed requires a G5 computer."

Any further ideas or comments would be appreciated.

hmm...if the newest Adobe G5 update isn't new enough, then the so-called newer version CC is referencing must not exist on the Adobe site?

So PS7 is not compatible with the newest version of the G5 processor??

It reads like a fair question to me...what am I missing?

Adobe Photoshop 7.0.1 G5 Processor Plug-in update for Mac OS X 8/19/2003
#10
Crap. It's supposed to be up there already.

And Apple is supposed to have the new version on the new G5 machines.

I have the exact same problem as Per Christensson. Keeps telling me that it "...requires a G5 computer"

Chris, from that last post, are you telling me that I may already have the G5 optimized plug-in on my machine? (Dual 2.0/160GB/1.5GB RAM - latest model, purchased last week) Any way of finding that out?

Gary

Yes, it may already be on your machine, or on the Apple CD. Read the Apple release notes.
#13
I found the installer under Applications/Installers/Photoshop G5 Update/ however that file still has the same problem...argh!

I guess it's not going to work unless Adobe releases another update...
#14
Yeah, I already tried the installer that comes with the G5. Same problem. You'd think if there was a new version for the new machines, Apple would have bundled the right one... =P

Hopefully, there is a new version of the installer coming out soon that will recognize the newer G5 processors. I know Photoshop CS is available, but from a development standpoint, I can't imagine updating the G5 updater would require too much work.

Thanks Gary -- at least now I know I'm not the only one! =)

Well you guy's with all that extra cash buying those G5s should be running PSCS not Version 7.
#16
Neither the installer that comes from Apple with the new G5s, nor the installer available currently for download from this site works. Both are Version 1.04, dated 8/19/2003 which is not compatible. Is there a place to download this "new" version that is being referred to in this thread?
#17
We spent all the money on Photoshop first, then when we saved up we got the G5...but I guess that's life eh? If someone has any solutions we'd really appreciate it if you let us know. Thanks,
Gary

Agreed Gary. Plus some of us are happy enough with version 7 and don't really need to update to CS yet at this time. So are there any ideas when this purported "new" updater will be made available for public download? Anyone?
#20
It was supposed to be available already. We're looking into it.

We just got the file from Apple and I'm working on getting it posted.

"We just got the file from Apple and I'm working on getting it posted."

Great let us know. Appreciate the help!
#23
Thanks John. Your help is greatly appreciated. :)
#24
Thank you John!

I am in the same situation with a new dual G5 2.0GHz. My guess is that the updater does not recognize the new CPU codes as valid G5 machines.

Please let us now when its posted.

Thanks
Carlos

Anything new yet? I'm starting to get worried it's not going to happen... Gary

Lots of iMac G5s are going to need this update soon too if they're running Photoshop 7. I'm sure they'll be incompatible with the old updater as well. Hopefully they'll get it posted soon since they've had the file now since last Thursday?

I have a PowerMac dual 2.5 and I'm waiting for the update to your G5 updater. Pleae Adobe help us. Oh, and for the dude who said any new PowerMac owner can afford Photoshop CS....It's not a compelling upgrade until Adobe addresses the RAM limit or perhaps adds more 64 bitness to the Photoshop code. Then there might be a reason to upgrade!
#28
Photoshop CS....It's not a compelling upgrade

we must be in two different worlds...

16-bit: layers, adjustment layers, type layers
improved interpolation
camera raw plugin (included)

to name three...
#29
GW,

until Adobe addresses the RAM limit or perhaps adds more 64 bitness to the Photoshop code

Adobe has nothing to do with this. While the hardware (G5) is 64-bit ready, there is no operating system that is 64 bit. Until Apple and Bill Gates release a true 64-bit system, all applications are bound by the 2GB usable limit.

Photoshop CS....It's not a compelling upgrade

You don't realize what you're saying. :D

I even bought a brand new machine just to be able to run Photoshop 8.

To the features already listed by G Ballard add: the Shadow/Highlight Adjustment and many more features.

I skipped Photoshop 5.5 and 6.x, upgrading from Photoshop5 to 7.0.1. Yet,. I can tell you that the upgrade from 7 to 8 is much more of an advance than going from 5.0 to 7.0.1.

Upgrading to CS is a no brainer.

While I don't discount that CS may indeed be a worthwhile upgrade, right now I'd just like to be able to take full advantage of version 7 with an updater that works thank you very much. :)
