Picture Lift Edge Effect

Hi,
I’ve seen many pictures in ads which show a photo that looks like the sides are lifting off the page, but the centre portion of the picture is still attached to the page. The drop shadow is a major part of this illusion.
I have attempted to do this with bad results. Does anyone have any suggestion about creating this effect. A plugin would be nice but I have not been successful in finding one.
I know of the page-curl effect but this is not what I am thinking of.

perhaps you could post a link to an example ? I’d love to help but I can’t think of anything I’ve seen that resembles your description.

Jodi,

I think I saw the effect in a TV ad, but I’ve also seen them in some newspaper ads. My search of the Web for examples has so far been fruitless.

The effect shows the picture partially peeling away at the sides from the underlying paper to which it appeared to be originally glued. The drop shadows really made the illusion although I don’t remember whether or not the top and bottom edges were slightly curved or not. (Maybe I should try that as a first step).

try the filter>distort>shear for starters to curl the image a bit where you want ( sometimes you have to manually rotate the image before applying this filter to get it to bend in the places you want it to bend )and then apply a shadow. Once the shadow is applied you can erase the parts of the shadow you don’t need. This is a quick basic way to do it…but as you are working at it you’ll probably find some other add-on tricks ;)…it’s all in the fun of it !

John,

Scott Kelby includes a nifty way of doing this in his excellent book "The Photoshop Elements Book for Digital Photographers".

He calls it the "Polaroid Effect", and it’s done, as Jodi suggests, with Shear.

You need to make a couple duplicates of the image layer, then expand your canvas so that you can see the edges of your image. Fill the lowest image with your shadow color and blur it. Shear the image layer and the shadow layer in opposite directions, then align them so that it looks like right…

I made a quick sample of this technique and posted it. See if this is what you’re after:

Today at the library I got Scott Kelby’s Photoshop Book For Digital Photographers. I will have to see if it’s in this one also. I also got Adobe Photoshop 7 Classroom In A Book, any opinions on this one?

Have A Nice Day, 🙂

Hi Byron,

That’s exactly the effect I want to duplicate. Thanks to you (and to Jodi as well) for the tips.

Thanks, Jodi… it’s one of my favorite tricks – maybe because it’s one of the first things I was able to do with Elements that I was really pleased with.

James, I don’t know either of those books, but based on my reading of the Kelby Elements book, I have faith that his Photoshop book will be a worthwhile read.

Jodi, only caution on that one is that it’s out of print and written for earlier version of Photoshop – like 4 or 5…

Byron and James, the Kelby Photoshop book is even better than its Elements counterpart, although in all fairness it’s because there are a few things you can do with full Photoshop that you can’t do with plain vanilla Elements.

Chuck, I didn’t realize it was a ’98 print…I guess I should have read further….which i usually do right before i actually give my CC# to Amazon. Darn photoshop advances so quickly ! I think the info in it would still be valuable regardless but i don’t think i want to spend that much on it. I don’t have any photoshop books…oh wait, i do…5o fast techniques for PS7…Georges. I should study that further before I do anything 😉

I have Kelby’s book (it’s a must). I also have Photoshop 7 Studio Techniques. This one is amazing.
Ben Willmore explains things in a simplistic language, and adds a "techno bable translator" at the
end of every chapter for terms like ppi, anti-aliasing, etc. It’s fun-tastic!

Please some one help me. I have the Kelby book and when I do the shear filter on the actual photo it appears with unsmooth edges and also when I do the last step of tilting it the edges become even more rigid. Please help.

Carla,

One thing comes to mind immediately — depending on your image display zoom setting, the curved lines may LOOK more jagged than they truly are.

If you haven’t already, set your zoom at 100% and see if you still observe the problem.

Thanks Byron. I figured out what it was. I had the shadow layer at a bad position so when I merged the two layers it would create a rigid effect. So before I merge it I made sure that it would only show on the right and the bottom as the picture shows. After 4 hours of research, I finally solved my problem.
