Why do the PS and PSP clone tools insist on changing clone source area?

Hi,

If one wants to clone a bit of human skin…wants a real even tone…one could just clone a spot that’s a nice color and use the CLONE STAMP TOOL in PS or the CLONE TOOL in PSP.

PROBLEM: It makes you select an area to clone – BUT THIS AREA moves as you are cloning. If you move the clone brush 3 inches, the source clone area moves 3 inches. This is EXHAUSTING having to reselect the source area every second.

I can’t imagine what the usefulness is of the current design, but it would be entirely useful to simply have a static clone source area with which to paint some even toned "skin."

Does anyone know how to make the clone source area static, stay put, not move or change?

Thanks!

Love,

Me

RTFM. There is an option to set the clone stamp to "Aligned". This option is set by default and causes the clone stamp origin to move. Deselect it.

Ahh…. I thought he’d tried that already, and was annoyed that he had to keep taking his finger off the mouse button when painting his cloned area…

And a unprofessional way of quoting me. I did say ‘RTFM’, but I gave the answer to his question nevertheless.

Excuse my ignorance but if you’re just ‘cloning’ a single colour from a reference point why not just use the eye dropped and paint away…?

Hi,

Thanks for the reply!

Well, because it’s not a color I want, but a complex of texture and colors…tried using just the color, but skin is so much more than that…it works best when I can select and actual area that comprises multiple colors and textures, like human skin…even if the nuances and differences in color are subtle…they are far different than one color.

I tried unselecting the "align" button in Paint Shop Pro, but got the same results…the source area moves, the source area indicator moves

YOu can see an example of what I mean at http://themint.us/

It’s just a test picture showing the problem even with the "aligned" button unchecked.

Notice the clone area in the middle of the gif. Notice the source clone area started in the upper left corner. It should have stayed as that little whitish triangle, but instead merged to red, green, brown, etc.

How can I paint with the original source area…that textured little whitish area?

In article <biaotq$p4d$
conceptions.com says…

What you have to do is paint little bits at a time. As you paint with the clone brush you will see that the cross that marks the source of what you are painting moves, keeping sync with the area you’re painting too. It has to do this…if it didn’t it wouldn’t be "cloning" one area to another. What you have to do is only copy the area you want to use.
So what you need to do is this…
Have the "aligned" box unticked. Right click on the exact spot you want to start cloning from. Place the cursor on the exact spot you want to start cloning to. Left click and start painting but DON’T paint so far that the cross showing the source of the clone leaves the area you want to copy. When you get to the edge, release the left mouse button, move the brush to where you want start cloning again and paint a little bit more. If you want to use the clone brush to copy a small area to fill a large area you need to keep painting little bits, never letting the cross that marks the clone source leave the area you want to copy.
To copy the tiny area you want you would probably be better to create a "Brush Tip" of that texture. To that select the little piece you want to use, click File > Export > Custom Brush, and save it. Now go to the Paint Brush tool and select that brush from the drop down list of custom brushes and paint away.
Another thing that is probably worth mentioning is not posting images here… its something that you are not supposed to do at non-binary newsgroups. I notice that you post from Easynews… if you look at this group there you will see that yours is the only image posted here in the last 25 days. The link to a web page is a good idea… although posting the image as a jpeg (16 million colours and about 40k) might have been better than a gif (256 colours and 242k).

All the best

I think what you want to do is create a custom brush. Many tutorials can be found on the web. For example:
