Having learned that the photoshop on ebay is pirated, I wonder where can someone buy old versions of photoshop. For my purposes I don't need the CS version. Anything less than CS is fine all the way down to version 6 (including 6). Can anyone give us some tips on where to buy old versions?
Thanks

get photoshop elements if you don't need the full current version. elements 3 is less that 100 bux and contains most of the stuff a home user or hobbiest will ever need (and more). check amazon and the adobe store.

You need to realize that there are very few legitimate old versions of Photoshop available. When a person upgrades to a new version, the old version does not become available for sale. Under the licensing, you hold only one licence for all the versions you buy through upgrades, so it is illegal to sell the old version. Buying an old version from someone who has upgraded is almost as bad as buying a pirate copy. You still can't register it with Adobe, you can't get tech support, and you can't upgrade it.
There might be a few legitimate older versions available. Sometimes stores have old copies on hand that they might be clearing out. And if a person has just stopped using the program, for some reason, they might sell the license. But these are difficult to find with all the pirates on eBay. The clue is to make sure that the program is registerable with Adobe.

While one CAN buy a legit "used version of Photoshop", the rules surrounding the purchase and license transfer are pretty strict. Adobe allows it, but only with a proper transfer of license.

It sounds like a very good opportunity for an enterprising individual with sufficient savvy as to observe all the tecjhnicalities involved.
On the other hand won't the pirates just undercut?

If you have anything approaching a "new" system (say within the last year), it would better behoove you to just get Elements, rather that an older version of PS. Support is going to become limited, and for newer systems, that means down the road, it's NOT going to run as well after you upgrade other parts of your computer system. Unless you have one dedicated system that you plan to never upgrade to install PS 7 or earlier upon, just get Elements.
You will never know what you are "missing," nor will you care in the long run.
