We have several users who scan large architectural drawings into Photoshop, and are complaining about having to turn off Pixel Aspect Ratio Correction every single time. Is there a way to configure Photoshop CS/8 so that it behaves like 7 when you scan in a large drawing?

Thanks.

Keith,

Thank you. We have this EXACT same problem. We scan oversize black and white drawings with an OCE scanner/plotter, and they come into Photoshop CS as a Bitmap .TIF file.

Every time one of these scans in opened in Photoshop CS, we have to change the Pixel Aspect Ratio to "square". This doesn’t happen when the same file is first opened in Photoshop 7.

There is NO setting on the scanner to change Pixel Aspect Ratio, or whether or not it’s a black and white vs. gray-scale scan. The OCE ONLY scans to black and white.

Hopefully someone out there knows a solution, other than creating an action to run on every file that is scanned (which can be done).

Dave.

We’re using a similar OCE unit as well. We could downgrade our users to Photoshop 7, but it’d be a waste of CS licenses. Frustrating.

Let me guess: OCE saves the files as a FAX encoded TIFF, but doesn’t include metadata to set the aspect ratio ? And since FAX encoding is normally 2:1, that’s the aspect ratio Photoshop uses.

The trick to avoiding the pixel aspect ratio correction in Photoshop when scanning to file from an Oce scanner is to set the compression on the scanner to none. The group iv and group iii compression factors set up the pixel aspect ratio problem that causes the drawings to bunch up. Unfortunately the file sizes are now at least three time as big.

So, people affected by this need to ask the culprit, OCE, to produce a fix.

There are a few additional options. The latest Oce printers (Oce TDS and TCS products) offer the capability to scan directly to PDF, which may give you the coding you need.

For earlier Oce products, almost all of them are provided with software tools such as Oce View Station which allow the user to convert raster images to almost any format necessary. Yes, it is a post-process, but it may get the job done.
