system crash when adding layers in PS CS

Has anyone else had this problem:

I open two files in PS CS, drag one on top of the other to create two layers in one project, and the computer completely crashes!
I'm running on an HP laptop with Windows XP and plenty of RAM I have done this same action a hundred times on PS 7 and had no problem...anyone know why CS is beating up my PC?
