Robert is correct about the scratch files. However, there are also temp files named ~something.tmp created in directories where you open and manipulate images under some conditions that should be renamed when you save or abandon your work. Sometimes this process doesn’t complete properly, and the temp file remains in place instead of being saved with the name intended, according to some postings. If you have these files in your image directories (or, perhaps, in the scratch or temp directories if you were creating a new image?) you might try Open As with various types to see if it can be opened.
