Cannot read file extension

Using Photoshop 5.5 & Windows XP Pro (Dell computer w/38GB of memory), I am trying to import RAW images from a DVD/R into Photoshop.
I keep getting a message stating: Cannot Read File Extension. What can fix this problem?
Thanks,
Jess

Jesus, are you sure that PS 5.5 supports the file format?

Without researching Photoshop 5.5, I'd be really surprised if ANY, or many, raw file formats were supported in 5.5.

Maybe try downloading and using Adobe's Digital Negative conversion tool <http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/> but that may not work either; no idea if that output format is supported in 5.5.

Or upgrading to CS or CS2...

dng won't even work in 7. i'm pretty sure it won't work on 5.5.

And what kind of RAW files are those?

These RAW files are from a Nikon D70 digital camera.
Art,
Is there any particular advantage if CS over CS2 in dealing with RAW format as well as PSD, jpg, TIFF, etc? I am gathering images to be published in our company yearbook and have not had a problem with anything, except these RAW images.
Thanks,
Jess

Jesus,

I'd go with CS2 if you have a choice just because it's the current release and you won't be able to find CS anywhere unless it's a leftover. But Adobe has already stopped supporting it in some ways.
Such as RAW support.

The D70 RAW files are supported in CS2, by the 3.1 RAW plugin.

I can't find the list of supported file formats for 2.4, the last (as in final) Camera RAW plug in for CS, but the D70 is old enough that it should work.

Your other option is to download Nikon Viewer from a Nikon site, such as <http://support.nikontech.com/>, but you will need a camera serial number to get it. Other than that, it's free.

One thing worth trying, although I won't swear that it'll work -- Nikon's file format is based on .tif. So copy a couple of the RAW .nef files to your hard drive, change the extention from .nef to .tif and see if you can open them.

If none of this works, contact me directly...
