Using PE 2 on Win 98. Enhance–>adjust Brightness/contrast–>Brightness/contrast… An eye dropper appears, no preview screen appears, and the program totally freezes requiring Ctl-Alt-Del to get out. If tried uninstalling & re-installing all to no avail.

Any help would be appreciated.

Try deleting the Preference folder. With Elements closed, click on start up icon and then make a quick grab for the Control, Alt, and Shift keys. Hold all three down at once until you get a screen asking if you want to delete Settings. Say Yes. The folder will rebuild as PSE continues to launch, although you will have to redo any customized settings you have.

If this doesn’t work, repost and let us know.

Hint: When something like this happens, always try deleting preferences first, before the uninstall/reinstall routine. Even though you uninstall, that Preference folder doesn’t get removed unless you do it manually, so your new install isn’t as clean as you think it is. Good luck!

It worked. Is there a more elegant way to delete preferences either from within PE 2 or by deleting a file via Windows Explorer?

Thanks,

Brian

Brian,

Sure, you can locate the preference file navigating with Exlorer and delete it prior to a new install.

What is the exact name of the file including its extension?

Thanks,

Brian,

For your OS…

Delete the Adobe Photoshop Elements [2.0] Prefs.psp file in the Windows/Application Data/Adobe/Photoshop Elements [2.0] Prefs folder.

(according to a search on the Adobe Knowledge Base, I don’t use your OS so I had to look it up)

Hope this helps.
