Want the ultimate control during B&W conversion? Splitting off the channels from an image and copying them into an image as layers is like the Channel Mixer on steroids! You get all of the benefits of layers: opacity, blend modes, Blend If, etc.

My new TLR Split Channels action set makes it easy to preview 10 different channels for an image. It makes a copy of your image and then splits off the channels from RGB, CMYK, and LAB conversions. The available channels include: CMYK Cyan, CMYK Magenta, CMYK Yellow, CMYK Black, LAB Lightness, LAB A, LAB B, RGB Red, RGB Green, RGB Blue, Mode:Grayscale, Desaturate.

After you preview the channels, you can make grayscale layer sets for any or all of the conversion sets.

My tutorial, "Split Your Channels," will get you started using the Split Channels technique. Be on the lookout for an update to the tutorial that goes beyond the RGB example.
