Photo Elements 1.0 stops responding after I try opening files

I try to "file" "open" images and Photoshop Elements 1.0 on my Windows 2000 P4 machine.
I checked for updates and will install SP4.
Any ideas ?

What does it do? Freeze? Crash? How much RAM do you have?
