temp files

I’ve been using PS CS2 for about two weeks now and I’m having one problem that I never got with CS.

I decode a RAW file (from a Canon 20D) in Camera RAW. I bring it over into Photoshop and do additional work on it. Things like cropping, Smart Sharpen and so on. Then I try to save it as a .psd file. I like to drop off the first bunch of letters and numbers that the Canon creates and just use the last four digits with an X in front, like X1234. That way I can get back to the original RAW file very quickly.

Well my problem is that from time to time Photoshop is telling me that I can’t save this file with that name because I already have a file of that name open. I check in Bridge and there’s inevitably a temp file that I didn’t create in the folder. The name doesn’t look at all like either my original 20D file name nor the new one. But if I delete this mystery temp file I can go back into Photoshop and save the worked-on file the way I wanted to in the first place.

So what’s happening? Is this a bug in PS CS2 or do I have something enabled that I’m not aware of? It’s getting to be a pain to go temp hunting in the middle of my work flow.

Not sure. It sounds like something a few other users have reported – but that we haven’t seen.

We need to know more about your system and any third party utilities you might have running.

Also: does this ever happen when you’re working JUST in Photoshop, or JUST in Bridge?

It’s on a AMD 1700 system about two years old. I’ve got a gig of memory. the C drive is about half full.

The other programs are conventional. I run Norton Anti-Virus as well as Microsoft Anti-Spyware. More to the point the computer is virtually unchanged since CS.

I’ve always worked with Bridge and Photoshop open at the same time. I think to close one would miss the point wouldn’t it?

Hello:

I have the same problem as David Grandy describes, and, as in his case, it was not one that occured with CS and its browser.

Quentin – and can you answer the questions I’ve asked?

(and we really didn’t need the list of plugins)

Chris and others,

This issue has been somewhat reproducable for me in PS7. I say somewhat, so as to suggest that I cannot make it happen, but the resolution I use works every time.

In my case, it happens most often (but not always) with freshly scanned, UNsaved images, and it usually happens to me when there is more than one file open in photoshop.

The resolution that I use (a couple of times a week) is to close all other open images, then I can save without incident. In the event it’s the only image open, I duplicate the image, close the original without saving (losing history palette data) and then save the duplicate, again, without incident.

It happens in Win98SE as well as XP.

Not looking for a resolution, just making an observation.

Peace,
Tony

Tony – are you talking about "can’t save because the file is open"? In PS 7 that was caused by the OS and psicon.dll.

But CS and CS2 don’t have that DLL.

Yes, I am. Based on your reply, apparently this is a differnt issue – but it presents the same.

Tony – no, this gives the same error, but has different behavior (the temp files).

Chris,

I’m not running any other programs I run Norton scans every couple of days, but I do not have it on autopilot). I almost always open PS CS2 first, then open Bridge, and I use them together, going back and forth.

Since I’ve only had CS2 for a week or so, I still usually forget to close Bridge and am surprised to find it when I close Photoshop. So, the usual sequence is: open PS, then open Bridge; close PS and then close Bridge.

I work only with *.psd files, having initially converted them from the *.jpg’s transferred from my camera.

The temp files only appear some of the time. I’ve tried using the Kodak plug-ins in a systematic way to see whether they cause the temp files, but there doesn’t seem to be a link there.

Most of my images are 20 megs or so, but the temp files are usually twice that.

I still need somebody to see if this happens with JUST Photoshop or JUST Bridge running.

And I still don’t know what is creating those files.

Chris,
I get the temp files on a random basis, but only when running both CS2 and Bridge. I open the image in Bridge and save from Photoshop as a different type of file by using "File/Save As" into the same folder of the original file. I change the file type but not the prefix. I am running XPPro SP1 with 1 gig memory. I have an AMD 64 Processor. I get a message such as below.

COULD NOT SAVE AS
"g:\Photos\D2X\…\_DSC0019.Tif" Because the File is already in use or was left open.

The temp file is
~PS8.Tmp
Size is 86.52 MB
If I delete the temp file I can then save the file from Photoshop without any additional trouble.

I was playing with my laptop today (activating CS2). I found one of the tmp files in the recycle bin. I restored it, and changed the name from ~ps182.tmp to ~ps182.psd. As I had suspected, PSD was the correct extension. The thumbnail now shows in the Bridge and PS opens it fine. It is one of the images that was lost earlier.

This was from an interactive session, moving a copyright layer in 3-6 images at a time. The Bridge may have been running but it was not active. The final step was to simply close and save the image in its original location from PS.

There is a lot more in this thread: "PS CS2 Temp files not removed on closing" #1, 3 May 2005 11:40 am </cgi-bin/webx?13/0>

It has happened to me with the Bridge and IP alone, converting a selection of raw files to PSD. Others have reported it simply moving images from one folder to another with the Bridge. I talked to others at a local guild meeting this week and they had seen the problem but had not researched or reported it. They had assumed probable user error. The most common (but not exclusive) trigger seemed to be some kind of batch processing. I hope this helps some.
