Styles not showing

For some reason when I drag a style to the canvas it appears in the layers palette however it is not visible. Any help would be appreciated

Do you have something on the layer for it to apply to?

Styles can be applied to empty layers – but, well, they won’t show anything.

I fumbled around and managed to get an image by filling the layer and then selecting the style. Thanks much
