WinXP 64 and older versions of Photoshop

Does anyone know of a press release or other official Adobe position on WinXP 64 and older versions of Photoshop? I am quite happy with Photoshop 7.0 and don't want to upgrade just yet. Is it an impossibility for previous version to be patched into a 64-bit native version? Or is that what upgrading to the latest version is for?

all we've heard is that when it becomes practicle there WILL be a fully 64 bit version.

cs2 can take advantage of the extra memory space right now though...

The only 64 bit non-Apple computer I've seen is the Dell 760. I guess there are others too. I believe it offers an overlap between 32 bit and 64 bit OS, allowing programs designed for either to run.

If this is indeed true, it is way cool!

I would not recommend jumping into WinXP Pro x64 unless all of your software and device drivers are fully compliant with it.

There is some backward compatibility with 32-bit applications, but only if they are fully 32-bit. Some legacy apps may have 16-bit Windows 3.1 style installers and/or be a mix of 16-bit and 32-bit modules of code. They probably won't work.

Also, there is a tendency for some users to install brand new operating systems on older computers expecting to get a performance boost from the new software. Often you get the opposite. For WinXP Pro x64, I would only consider installing it on a brand new machine with tons of RAM and disc space, or an existing but still pretty new machine with 64-bit capable CPUs.

hmm... while true in most cases, there aren't many "older" 64 bit systems laying around, i suspect. ;)

personally i'm gonna wait a bit (a year or so) for the fallout from the first generation of intel em64t's and winxp64. that's where i'm headed though... maybe by then (18 mos sounds reasonable <g>) a 64 bit version of our favorite photo editing package will be available or forthcoming.

I was using a similar strategy ... and then revised it.

Sooooo will go for a new machine with XP Pro with a view to the freebie update to XP Pro 64 before July :-)

Talking of new stuff... using FastStone 4in1 browser at the mo'

It really does a lovely Windows Aqua
