Photoshop CS2 freezes/hangs when opening first image of session

I have been using Photoshop CS2 for a few days, and I love everything about it except for this one annoyance...

It's quite simple, really. The first image that is opened after starting PS, nomatter the extension and nomatter the size, causes the program to hang for about a minute before it finally opens. Every subsequent image loads quickly after that. If I close PS and reopen it, the first image to be opened during that session takes a minute to load as well.

Any idea what is causing this problem? Thanks in advance!

Specs:

Windows XP Pro SP2
AthlonXP 2500+
1gb RAM
60gb Western Digital 5200 RPM HD (install volume, secondary PS scratch) 80gb Maxtor 7200 RPM HD (primary PS scratch)
Radeon 9500 Pro 128mb (OmegaDrivers based on Cat 4.2)
SoundBlaster Extigy

And is your default printer set to something on the network that isn't turned on, or uses a Netware server?

Set a local printer as default and I'll bet the problem goes away.

For now that seems to have done the trick. I'll let you know if it starts acting up again. Thanks! :)

That's an old problem (worse on some version of Netware - it could hang for 20 minutes!).

Well I never had this problem with PS7 or earlier. And I don't use Netware (20 minutes, ouch!).

PS7 and earlier had the same problem. I recall debugging it in PS 5 and discovering that there's nothing Adobe can do about it. The only difference is that in older versions it would pause at launch instead of when creating the first document (depending on when the printer info was initialized).

Now that you mention it, PS7 has been hanging at launch recently as well. I never thought the two problems might be connected. Thanks for all this insight!
