Hi- Someone gave me a cd with pictures in .dcr format. I tried to drag it over to photoshop and I get an error message. Do I need a special program to view the pictures? I have a whole folder saved with the images, just not sure how to view them. Thanks. PS- I don’t even know what a DCR file is…first time I saw it was today.

It seems that it is a Kodak or Sony camcorda format:

File Format Module
KODAK PROFESSIONAL DCR File Format Module opens your camera’s DCR files in PHOTOSHOP Software, and it also opens the DCR files from Capture Studio or Photo Desk that have saved processing settings.

It is also a format used by Kodak DCS Photo Desk software.

I wonder if you can download the files from that CD to one of the Kodak kiosks at CVS (or similar) and save as JPEGs to a new CD?

I downloaded them into my folder on my desktop. I still don’t know what program can open it. I just want to view the pics and it seems impossible. Does it cost anything to download a program to open?

If it’s a photo CD from a photo lab, the viewing software may be included on the original disk.

Oh and sorry Ann. Seems in my first post I just repeated what you had already said.

You’ll have to excuse me. I’ve been dealing with the marketing folks all day. I’m a little dazed and confused.

Don’t worry — I was probably adding the Kodak bit as an "Edit" while you were typing your response!

Another idea: Can you open .dcr files via the file browser using the Camera raw plug-in?

I still don’t know what program can open it. I just want to view the pics and it seems impossible.

Try GraphicConverter.. Its a great shareware app, everybody should have at their disposal. There are times when Photoshop or other graphic apps refuse to open some files for me. I just fire up GraphicConverter, and PRESTO!… it opens em’ w/o complaint. I then simply Resave, and the problem is history.
