RAW-NEF filkes in Photoshop 7.0

I'm using a Nikon D200 shooting in RAW mode, and if I try to download RAW files to Photoshop 7.0 (Windows XP computer) I can't do anything with them. I've converted the files to .PSD, but cannot get more than .PSD or .TIF, and most filters (Distort, Pixelate, Render), and all Layer functions and Selection menu commands are grayed out. I did a trial version of Nikon Capture 4, but it seemed very limited, and it wouldn't let me use my Photoshop either. Does CS3 give me full functionality on RAW-NEF files, and will I have to go that far to solve the problem? What's the fix here? Thanks in advance for any help. Warren

16 bit support is more limited in v7. Use Image>Mode to convert from 16 to 8 bits per channel and the layer and other functions will no longer be grayed out.

This is improved in CS2 and 3.

I also shoot RAW with a Nikon. I download all my pictures from my camera card into a folder. I happen to use the current date or name of the event or place (a personal preference). Then, I use Adobe Bridge (with the current RAW converter) to view and adjust them, then use photoshop to work on them.
I am sure there are many other variations to this, it is just what I happen to use and it works for me.
Not knowing more about your particular hardware/software set up it is difficult to know what may be missing or what has to be configured for it to work the way you have described.

ACR 4.x supports the D200. ACR 4.x is not compatible with CS2. As a work-a-round you can use the free Picture Project software that comes with the D200 to import the nef files, then export them to a folder as jpg/tiff. This would then allow you to use PS7 to post process the jpg or tiff images. For additional information about ACR check out:

In general, Photoshop itself doesn't do RAW *but* the ARC comes with Photoshop handles RAW.

And because RAW isn't united format so different manufacture's, different model's have different RAW format, so different version of ARC (and other RAW converters) supports different camera model's. And Adobe wanna force Photoshop users to upgrade to newer Photoshop so Adobe doesn't support older ARC of older version of Photoshop.

I am not Nikon user but I am very sure that Nikon D200 was relased before CS3 so it should support by CS3 and of course CS3.

The D200 .nef file works well with the Adobe raw converter.
