does anyone have any ideas for reducing the yellow from an old scaned in newspaper picture.
I tried two diff. methods of an adjustment layer one with selective color and onecolor balance but wasn't satisfied with either

I would try a hue/saturation adjustment layer. Under "Edit", choose yellow, to target only the yellows, then lower the saturation and raise the lightness sliders...

1. Try not to scan at very high DPI, or you may want to try between 90-120 DPI or so (may even little lower). Also, depending on the software option, some has option to scan newspaper, magazine, photo etc. and it can make a big difference.

2. Then depending on the scan, you can use the combination of some very basic commands like

- Level = to reduce or get rid of the yellow, darken the black text

- Dodge/Burn = for the similar above but little more advance

The 2 above should give you a better separation between Text and Background, then you can fine tuning using other command's.

- Layers = well if you still not happy with the result of th above, then move to the next level by using "Layer", "Blending". If 2 layers doesn't make you happy then go for 3 or even 4.

- Selective-Color = and you still can't get rid of the yellow then go for "Selective Colors" or "Sat/Hue" etc.. but I don't think you should be able to have the problem solved by the first 2 options.

3. Back to option #2, *if* one "Level" doesn't give you what you want then you may try *another* "Level", and may be *another* "Level". By this time Dodge/Burn should have non problem.

Or what I am trying to say that multiple-Levels (or Curve) will give different result than single-Level (or Curve). Or (10) 10% is different than (1) 100%

Image->Adjust->Curves. Color correction is one of the things Photoshop excels at.

if it is b/w (newspaper articles, not the Sunday funnies, etc - you may wish to scan in b/w mode, or if the photos as well, try 265 color (8 bit) b/w mode

If it's a yellow cast you might also get good results by switching to LAB mode and using Image -> Adjust -> curves to tweak the b channel. (The b channel goes from yellow to blue. Move the midpoint of the curve slightly to the left.)

how about using a curves layer and sampling the white point from an area that doesnt have any print colour in it, within or just outside the picture? Make sure you set the sampling area of the color picker at 5x5 px

and onecolor balance but wasn't satisfied with either
