Help needed to color-correct blue photos

Hi all,

My sister-in-law had a bunch of photos of her baby ruined by a photo outlet, and was wondering if I could help to color-correct them in any way. Below is a cropped example of one of the photos that I scanned in. I've played around with Paint Shop Pro XI but can't make the image have normal colors. So does anyone have any tips on fixing them? They're all blue like in the example. I also have access to Photoshop CS2 if that can help me in any way.

If all else fails, I'm thinking of just grey-scaling them all because at least they look better than blue that way. :(

I don't use either of your programs, but color, gamma, hue, map, balance or any combination of these words is what you should look for in the menus of whatever image editor you end up using.

The photo is pretty bad color-wise and gamma-wise, but it MIGHT be salvaged with a lot of patience.

Converting to greyscale might be the only way to make them really decent.

Are you sure the NEGATIVES are that bad, or did they just screw up the prints? If the negs are OK, just have them redo the prints FOR FREE.

Anyway, I'm gonna play around a bit with the one you linked to and see if I can do something. If I can, you can.

Yes, the negs were ruined. The place says they have no idea how it happened. They didn't charge her for the prints, but that's really no consolation. She has invested in a digital camera since. :)

I'm going to keep playing too, to see what I can come up with. I've downloaded a few trial "color correction" apps and plug-ins, but they haven't helped either, although I realise this is partly due to my lack of expertise in color correction.

I'll clean my scanner lens too. ;)

are these scans? or jpgs of digital camera?

either way of course this is a very low res photo.

if real photos then i assume the negatives are at least ok

if digital ones, and the camera was set wrong re white blance then thats a different matter.

the only was to correct colour is of course to colour balance it, but its always going to be a compromise with this level of no details

its going to be a well that'll do, with out doinf some serious work with masking etc

i tried a fair bit here but the quality of the photograph isnt that good to work on,

including photo filters, colour balance , curves, hue, and a whole bunch of stuff

In the end, grayscaling them may be the best answer but here's a possible approach for correcting the color to some degree. It's impossible to tell how well this will work overall since the example image you posted really gives little detail to work with. I primarily based the adjustments on the assumption that the item in the lower left corner was supposed to be yellow:

1) open the Histogram Adjustment tool, reset it to its default settings, then set Edit mode to Colors (from Luminance) and select the Red channel, leave Output max at 255 and set Ouput min = 120, set Gamma to .63 and leave the other settings as is.

2) open the Histogram Adjustment tool again, reset it to its default settings, then set the Low value to 64, the High value to 239, Gamma = 1.33 and leave the other settings as is.

As I mentioned above, I have no idea how well this will work overall since there is so little information to work with in regards to the example you posted. For instance, is the striped cloth under the child supposed to be red? The object in the lower left corner yellow? Without some sort of color reference to work from, we're just adjusting colors as a guess.

Presuming that you have access to the negatives:

IF they are all a cast other than 'orangish' and you have a film scanner, scan them in as positives.

Go to levels and click on the 'White' eyedropper, then move onto the scan where the -=edge=- of the film shows. Do -=not=- go into the image itself. Click there.

Save the profile.

Select All, Menu Image, Adjust, Invert. You should have a close to 'normal' image.

NOTE: for some clueless here who don't read, this is -=not=- "Selection, Inverse"!

You could try "Auto Levels" but, I've never been happy with its settings of the other two points. I just use the 'White" to clear the film cast.

Ah, the ignorance. There are three layers of color emulsion in color film and I believe each of them reacts to a different part of the developing solution. One of the tubes must have gotten clogged with a wad of rat hair or something and not all the colors (emulsions layers) were processed in the neg bath. Or something like that.

Had it been done manually instead of one of those "idiot- operator OK" machines a person would have noticed a problem or even been able to catch it and fix it before the film was "fixed" (nothing can be done with it afterwards). Of course nothing is done manually anymore.

I messed around a bit but usually it is impossible to get it right unless there is a color chart (admittedly, FEW regular people use a color chart for the first photo on their roll of film) or AT LEAST a face in the image. I am ASSUMING ;-) the baby's arm is a light pinkish hue, but it would help to know what the rest of the stuff is.

IOW, if you could post something with the face and tell me what colors the blanket, floor (or whatever it is), thing on the left, etc. are, it would help a lot.

So far, given the limited amount of info (ie the arm and unknows AFA the rest) the results were NOT totally disappointing, IOW, I think I /perhaps/ could improve it to "kind of acceptable" if I had an image containing the face. I have nothing to do so don't mind giving it another try.

So if you are willing to post that, I'll give it another try.

I have no idea of the real colors of the objects as they weren't taken at my home, so I'm just guessing too, and really only trying to fix the baby skin color.

I tried as well, the threshold was good which suprise'd me, knowing the color of the rug would help a little/lot.

I've worked on worse pic's, one almost black and pulled out a good image, This with PhotoShop.

Just google for the free image viewer/editor called IrFanview

using the option to color enhance you can reduce the blue and increase the red
and get it to be reasonably good

I understand the privacy thing, although there ARE about 250 million (if not a lot more) people in the US, but the funny thing is that I usually complain about pix being too big, and I can DEFINITELY not complain about that in this case. But I suppose it gives me some idea. But it would be a LOT easier to try getting usable results at least having a fourth of the tiny image you posted - it doesn't have to contain the face.

I will assume that as per granny's fix, the toys are purple and yellow.

I'll see what I can do given what you have posted, and if I come up with a "recipe" I'll post it for you (ie decrease red saturation, adjust blue color map to X%, etc.)

I gave it my best, considering the hour and the fact I do not have any "tint/underwater/etc. removal" filters installed. No luck. I did get the original arm fragment to look OK - sort of a pinkish yellow, but once the same parameters were applied to the entire (albeit thumbnailed) image, it was still NG, albeit less so than the original.
Frankly, I'm not sure why. Should have looked better but it didn't.

Perhaps granny can tell you exactly what filter she used and where you can get it. Even from the thumbnail I think you can get them to look pretty good.

I would be kind of interested myself, since this kind of color problem is among the most difficult to fix, as we have all found out - if we didn't know it already. I was too confident since I have been getting fairly good results with color balance, gamma etc matching and retouching, but this was too difficult for me. I guess that's why they make those special application filters!

I was actually quite amazed that granny's filter managed what it did - the total lack of partial color info is usually almost impossible to compensate for!

try using "open as" and choose "camera raw" in photoshop or photoshop elements

my best (using Photoshop elements 65) was with temperature at +40 (toward yellow end) and tint at +55 (toward purple end).

how old was the film? was it exposed to high temperatures, left in the sun or a car glovebox during the summer, or camera left near a radiator for an hour or two - any of these sometime between purchase of film and developing of film?

Hi a,

here is a quick fix; not perfect, but a huge improvement over the current image:

1. sample a strong cyan from the image with the Eyedropper tool (where babies clothes should be white)
2. Create a new layer and fill with the sampled colour
3. Click on Ctrl+I (to invert the sampled colour)
4. Change merge mode to Linear Dodge (Add)
5. Flatten the image
At this stage the image is looking a lot better, but too bright.
6. Use Shadow/Highlight tool to darken image a little (may have to put
'highlight amount' slider on max. value)
7. Do last colour correction tuning with your preferred tool in Photoshop (or whatever editor you are using)

It uses the standard 'Mandrake' technique, a quick google will tell you a bunch.

Basicly it uses the blue and green channels to rebuild a red channel. That's it's weakness and All blue image can't be corrected. No green to use. An image with an uneven amount of residual red ( there is almost always Some red data ), say by the incorrect use of a strobe to light the foreground won't, correct well either. An image with Only blue and green data, no red data at all, doesn't correct well either.

The steps as, I remember them,

1) Create 3 duplicate layers of the original photo
2) Fill the middle layer with 50% gray.
3) Make the top duplicate layer's blending mode to 'Luminosity' and Merge that layer down with the middle gray layer.
4) Create a new fill layer above this b/w image . Check 'Group with Previous Layer'.
5)Fill this layer with red .
6)Change this layer's blending mode to 'Multiply' and merge it down into the Gray layer. This Rebuilds the Red channel.
7) Change the blending mode of the Rebuilt Red layer to 'Screen' and merge it down into the first duplicate layer.
