Auto Color Grayed Out

I am trying to use Auto Color to adjust an image in Photoshop CS. The menu option is grayed out. Auto Contrast and Auto Levels work fine.

Any ideas on what the problem might be?

Check the color mode of the image. Perhaps it is 'Indexed Color' (as in GIF files).

The image is CMYK Color mode. In the Image/Adjustments menu, Auto Color, Match Color, and Shadow/Highlight are grayed out. All other menu items are available.

I'm baffled!

It appears that Auto Color is only available in RGB mode, not CMYK. VERY frustrating that this isn't spelled out in the documentation.
