Hello!
Can anyone tell me how to make a circular gradient overlay in Photoshop -- something that fades in from black to reveal the underlying layer, kind of like this:

I've tried using the layer style tool (the overlay always turns out really huge) the gradient tool on a stroked circle (only fades in from one direction) and a couple other things.
Thanks in advance for any advice!!!

Lots of different ways to do this-
Probably the easiest way I would think is:
1: Make a circular selection with elliptical marquee (m) 2: Fill with black or some other color you choose
3: Go to Select;Feather then experiment with the sizes
3: Hit delete
this will give you a soft solid to clear gradient from outer edge in starting with a medium gray. If you want a darker, more solid edge then just go Image;Adjustments:Levels and slide the black arrow towards the middle (also if you check the preview box in bottom right you can watch the adjustments real time and can see how much you are darkening) Also using the middle gray slider moving it to the right gives a slighter effect (less edge more transition)
Hope this helps
