PGM to PDF -- Fonts don't come out right

Since installing Pagemaker 7.0 on an XP machine, I can make a PDF OK (Pagemaker to Distiller) but the fonts don't come out right (see screen capture - website address below).

To get the PDF to come out with the correct fonts (all Arial, by the way), I have to transfer the Pagemaker file and linked files to my trusty old Win98SE computer, which then makes a perfectly good PDF file with no special configuring.

After I got this output, I copied all the fonts from old computer to this folder:
c:\program files\adobe\pagemaker 7.0\extra\fonts

I still get the same result. (You can see that the space character is showing up as "#".)

The "munged text" you see is exactly what I'm trying to get rid of - I'm not doing this for fun. I can't post the "correct" PDF because I am not finished editing it and before I can create a good PDF, I have to copy tons of files from the XP computer to the Win98SE computer. But this happens every time I try to make a PS/PDF file on the XP machine.

Can anyone tell me what folder TTF font files should go in for PG7/XP?

Are you creating the PDF by going to Print and choosing Acrobat Distiller?

I use Pagemaker 7.0 with WinXP, and have no trouble with fonts. You don't say whether you are using a font manager or not; if you are, install fonts according to your font manager's instructions. Otherwise, all fonts go in c:\windows\fonts. Fonts placed in the Pagemaker folder will only be available to PM. Install fonts using Control Panel.

Be sure that all font locations are listed under Settings -> Font locations in Distiller. Make sure "Ignore Truetype versions ..." is unchecked. Make sure Arial isn't listed in the "Never embed" area (Edit Adobe PDF Settings, "Fonts" tab). In general, read all the options in Distiller's settings very carefully.

If you are printing to a printer that has resident fonts, your print output may be substituting Helvetica for Arial. Try choosing another virtual printer.

Please post back and let us know what worked!

Yes, this is the correct interpretation of the problem. I am using Acrobat
6. Also, if I copy this file to the Win98SE computer, it appears the same
in Acrobat 5 Reader.

Now that you mention it, I see that the characters are being replaced with characters 4 ASCII units later. This must be an installation problem of some kind. Even though the letters are incorrect, I recognize that the font is indeed Arial. Will try re-installing Pagemaker, Distiller and post the outcome.

Hi Peggy -

I tried everything you mentioned and still get the "coded" PDF.

However, I was able to go directly from PM and "export to PDF" and got a perfectly normal PDF. This gets me over the hurdle right now, but I still will keep working on trying to find a solution to the PM>PS>PDF problem. This might indicate that the problem could be with Distiller.

Very strange, as the "export to PDF" command just automates the process, and still uses Distiller. When there are problems it is usually the other way round -- files which can;t be distilled by the automatic process can be distilled by printing to postscript and then using Distiller.

Questions: as you mention you are on XP, do you have the latest MS or Adobe postscript driver (both created by Adobe)? Do you have multiple versions of Distiller?

I thought it was strange too. I never have used the Export to PDF option before because I generally need to produce a press-quality PDF and email-quality of the same document. I don't have that PC with XP on it here, but will check and post the info about the Distiller versions later.

By the way, I'm sure that the drivers I have are not the latest -- how do you get the latest version?

The latest postscript drivers should be on both the Microsoft and Adobe websites -- probably the same driver as they worked together on them.
