can not calibrate monitor

i can not calibrate my monitor. the book is to confusing. tyeh tell me to set my monitor to desktop to display nutral grays. how do you do that??? then i tried to calibate it with out doing that they want me to set contrast to highest position, then set somthing else??? i do not know what all this means. should i just leave my monitor the way it is or can some one help me with this??? i have been here for several hours and no one has been able to help me.

David, what operating system and what type of monitor, CRT or LCD?
