I have a Photoshop file that has a text layer. This file was built on a computer with Windows XP (installed several years ago with updates & service packs added as they became available). That computer recently was replaced and I purchased a new computer (latest version of Windows XP pre-installed).
Now, when I open the previously mentioned file on the new machine, I get a message that states "Some Text Layers Contain Fonts That Are Missing. These Layers Will Need To Have The Missing Fonts Replaced Before They Can Be Used For Vector Based Output.
The font used in the file is "Arial Narrow" with the "Bold" feature selected from the drop-down menu. On the new machine there is no "Arial Narrow" font available – there is only Arial but, in addition to the "Bold" option on the drop-down menu, there is a "Narrow" feature on the drop-down menu.
One connot select two features from the drop-down menu (I can’t select both "Narrow" & "Bold" at the same time.) and Arial Narrow is not available. I’ve worked around the problem by opening the file on a 2-year old laptop – this computer has the "Arial Narrow" font available and does not give the error message.
When I go to the C:\Windows\Fonts folder I find that both machines have the Arial Narrow Bold (TrueType) font [ARIALNB.TTF] but the older machine’s version is 136K and has a date of 11/12/1998 while the new machine’s version is 175K and has a date of 7/14/2006.
The obvious solution is to replace the new font with the old font but will I be making a mistake if I replace the "new improved" version of the font?
