Hi,

I would like to know how I can create the same effect as the Photoshop 7 splash screen. Note that the magnify glass appears over the main picture and has a transparent effect on its background. Please help. Thanks.

Angela,

Create a new layer over the background.
Create a selection using the Elliptical Marquee tool.
Using the linear gradient tool go from a near white shade to transparent. Adjust the layer opacity and or fill settings as needed.

Dave,

Very inspirational! 🙂

I know how to bring up Photoshop’s splash screen. I am trying to create my own splash screen for my own application. I assumed that the splash screen is nothing but a jpg file. I was wondering how does applications like Photoshop brings up the jpg file. Does it uses Java to display the jpg? Or does it uses a special smaller application to display the jpg? Thanks.

Angela,

It depends on what you are using to write your application. How Photoshop does it is irrelevant. Just find out what image formats are supported by the program\code you are using to create the splash screen.

I think most just use BMP images because you can control color depth and they are uncompressed.

I tried what you have suggested from your previous post to create a jpg image. Then I used Java to bring up the image, but unfortunately, the background doesn’t look transparent to me. Is there anything that I can try? I want to create a splash screen that has the same effect as the Photoshop. The filter lens appears transparent on all background and it goes above the main rectangular image. Please help. Thanks.

Angela,

You will need to find out how to add a mask to your splash screen. I am not a programmer so I am afraid I can’t help you with that. You can try using a TIF file with an Alpha channel or transparency. However it may require two separate files, one with the image and the other with the mask.

If you’re trying to bring up your image in Java, are you using some kind of HTML or browser implementation to display the splash? If that’s the case, the only image format that currently supports transparency across all browsers, is GIF.

If you’re not in a browser, just ignore the above. <smile>

I think you need to look into some serious windows coding. blt-ing and masking to the desktop device context.
