Path Functions Greyed Out

Hello,

I searched the forums but didn't see anything like this so I hope no one will mind my asking. I have been trying to stroke a path all morning and my stroke path option is greyed out no matter how I try to approach it. I tried following the directions in the help files but nothing works. Can anyone help me?

What version? Change from 16 bit to 8?

Thank you Ed. It is CS and 8 bit on this one. I just figured it out though and I feel so silly. I had a shape layer highlighted instead of a new layer, so of course, it could not stroke that path. I really appreciate your response!
