How to change default resolution in Image Size dialogue box

I have been unable to determine how, or if, it's possible to change what appears to be the default resolution in the Image Size dialogue box. I'm shooting with a Canon Digital Rebel, and when shooting at full resolution in the camera, the resolution appears to default to 180
pixels per inch. I'd like to be able to set the default to a standard 300 ppi, based on output considerations. I know I can change the resolution to 300, and I believe (please tell me if I'm wrong here) as long as I restore the pixel dimension width and height to their 'before' values (i.e. before the change in the Resolution field), the image will remain the same (i.e. won't be modified) but the document size width and height in inches will now reflect the actual output size on the printer. Please confirm this. However, I'd like the default to automatically go to 300 ppi so I don't have to do this. Is there a way to accomplish this?

Curtis,

As long as "Resample Image" is unchecked you can change the output size to anything you want without changing the actual image.

As for the default value of 180 that is in the EXIF data set by the camera and would need to be changed on your camera.

Curtis,

You can easily make an action to do this and assign a F-key to that action.
