A 24-bit PNG supports full eight-bit transparency. The transparency is controlled by the alpha channel. A 24-bit PNG can have antialiased, translucent edges.
There are two ways to do this. The first is simply to create the image transparently in Photoshop using layers; if the edges of the image are antialiased, the PNG will have antialiasing in the transparency.
The second is to create an alpha channel with antialiased edges (all the Photoshop selection tools can create antialiased edges) and use the alpha channel for the PNG transparency.
