Should I delete PSE version 1 before I install version 2, or does the installation process do that? Thanks

I had both 1 and 2 on my Mac with no problems, until I tried to install some plug-ins. I couldn't get the plug-ins to go into 2. Then when I opened some photos, version 1 would over-ride 2. Being somewhat of a beginner, I finally deleted 1, to avoid this problem.
I installed version 1 on my older laptop, so that I can use it when needed, and just transfer the picture to the new Mac and version 2. I know its a roundabout way, but seems to work for me for now.
